Caution is a must for any non-native speaker of Chinese or Japanese. I lived in Japan for nearly nine years and have seen some weird choices of KANJI tattoo on foreigners. They soon have the real meanings pointed out to them on arrival.
Best to get a few trusted friends to check any designs before having ink done. This applies to any written word in any language other than your own. This summer I asked a girl why she had the word "Rope" written in Hebrew on her upper arm. (Was supposed to be her name but incorrectly spelt) This goes to prove that the person doing the ink should be familiar with the text too!

There are plenty of good places to get great tattoos done in Japan without spending too much. UK isn't all that cheap in my eyes. USA I don't know.
thanks for the info! i'm sure there are lots of would be tattooed out there who might reconsider getting inked on languages alien to them.
